Journey

Jack E. Lauber

Christmas, 1995

The princes gathered, as was promised

From before their fathers' fathers' days

To witness a prophecy fulfilled

A prophecy of a newborn king.

"Did you see the star foretold?" They asked

"The one we have watched and waited for?

Adam, Abraham and Isaiah

All heard our Father, and they prophesied

The world would have a wondrous new king.

A king whose love would be eternal.

A king who promised to lead the way

Back to our father’s celestial throne.

We saw His sign in the sky tonight.

We know the Messiah has arrived

As the prophets have foretold. We know

He comes in the quiet of the night.

We know he comes to a humble home,

and we must go to worship Him."

The princes said, so soft and low,

"It’s not to Babylon we go.

It’s not to see Ramses' city of gold

But to shelter a child from the cold.

We’ll travel through the world afar

To find the child who’s heavenly star

Appeared in the heavens for us tonight.

His mother has borne the Son of God."

So, outward through the world they rode

To find the child the prophets foretold.

The journey was filled with many trials.

They braved the perils far from home

To follow a prophecy they’d been taught

To seek and find the Child born King.

It wasn’t the priceless gift of gold,

Or myrrh or frankincense they brought.

It was their devotion and their faith

And their love they offered Him.

These were the things He accepted from them

Their devotion and faith, and also their love.

His parents welcomed them to their home.

And He smiled and laughed and reached out to them.

With tears of joy at their journey's end

The princes knelt before the child

And reaching out with reverent hands

They touched the face of the Son of God.
